This is a picture of the wound day 1 from the amputation of my dog’s leg. She has a long incision that is stapled. There is logs of bright red brusing that is expected to turn purple, other shades of red and possibly even green. She takes Cepholexin two pills twice per day to keep any infection at bay. She has to stay resting for two weeks and be taken out on a leash to go potty. After the first week she can go out without a leash but no running and playing.

This is a picture of my three legged dog after her amputation. We had just gotten home and she was back in her familiar back yard. She was able to do her pooping and peeing normally without any issues.

We picked Jack up at about 10:30am from the University Of Minnesota Small Animal Hospital. The Doctor said the was doing really well, getting around great but leaking fluid and would do so for the next three days or so. I went to Target and bought lots of cheap bedsheets to put around the living room. Jack will need to spend the next two weeks limited to the living room while she heals. We also bought a queen air bed so we can sleep in the room with her. When they brought her out she was definetly NOT slowed down by the loss of her amputated leg. She thankfully was also not appearing to be in any pain or too dopey. We were quite surprised to find that the fluid was actually blood and she was dripping quite a bit. The Doctor said this was normal and that as long as it was thinly colored it was a normal byproduct of the muscle compressing where the leg was. Gratefully the fluid only drips when she moves about excitedly. Each time she layed down no drips. Getting her in the truck was no problem as she could go up her ramp just like when she had 4 legs. When we got her home she laid down and slept alot so it wasn’t nearly as bad as we expected. We bought those doggy pee pads which do a great job if you can get them to lay their limb over a pad. Simply toss the pad and switch out a new one when the dog gets up.
